The Original Murder Mystery!

Is a brand new translation of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex,

Re-envisioned by director and co-translator, Gia Forakis,

As a site-specific, full immersion, Greek-Noir* Classic

With original music and song.

*Greek Noir = Greek Tragedy + Film Noir: a new genre coined by GF&CO.

In Sophocles' play, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is a King who must save his city from plague by solving the mystery of the murder of his predecessor, Laius. What Oedipus discovers is that he is Laius' son as well as his murderer, and that Oedipus' wife, Jocasta, is also his mother!

In GF&CO’s Greek-Noir O.REX, Oedipus in no longer a royal King, but rather, a "Kingpin" and nightclub owner – the unwitting detective to a murder he doesn't know he committed. In this production, the audience is seated at nightclub tables as this legendary drama unfolds around them and as the nightclub is transformed into the world of a 1940's film noir: actors dressed in black & white, drinks served to prevent symptoms of “The Plague," and traditional Choral Odes re-invented as original songs performed as period ballads on the nightclub stage.

The innovation of GF&CO’s Greek-Noir O.REX brings a fresh contemporary relevance to this ancient text, first by reminding us that putting limits on our own hubristic natures is a critical lesson for survival in any century, second by creating a new translation that maintains Sophocles’ play while creating an action-driven framework that makes this renowned classic immediately accessible to a new generation of theater goers!
